History
The University of Texas Baseball Program has a rich and proud tradition. The program has 6 national titles to its name (1949, 1950, 1975, 1983, 2002, 2005). Texas leads the nation with 32 appearances at the College World Series and 78 wins.
The Texas Longhorn baseball team started in 1896. Over 100 years of competition have produced a 2,988-1030-31 record (includes non-collegiate games). These wins and loses came at the hands of only 12 coaches in UT history. The most notable coaches were William J. Disch, Bibb Falk, Cliff Gustafson and Augie Garrido. These five coaches combine for 6 national championships, 63 conference championships and 2,792 wins for the Burnt Orange.
William J. (Billy) Disch coached the longhorns from 1911-1939. He had a record of 513-180 and won 20 Southwest Conference Championships. He has been elected to the Longhorn Hall of Honor, the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, and the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
Bibb Falk won 2 National Championships and 20 Southwest Conference Championships in 25 years at UT (1940-1942, 1946-1967). Falk played for UT in 1920 then went on to play in the majors where he replaced Shoeless Joe Jackson in left field after the Chicago Black Sox scandal. After retiring in 1967 he was elected to the College Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame and also to the Longhorn Hall of Honor.
Cliff Gustafson is the second winningest coach of all time for NCAA Division 1 Baseball. Coach "Gus" as he was called lead Texas to 22 Southwest Conference Championships, 2 National Championship, 17 College World Series Appereances and 1,427 wins. Gustafson played for Texas in the early 50's and a little while in a semi-pro league. He is also in the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Longhorn Hall of Honor, and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. He was also the National Coach of the Year in 1982 and 1983 and several conference coach of the year honors.
Augie Garrido passed Cliff Gustafson as the winningest coach of all time in 2003 versus Flordia State while winning the Super Regional and earning a berth to the College World Series. He currently has 1,430 wins, 666 loses and 8 ties in his career as a collegiate coach. Coach Garrido collected many of his victories while head coach at Cal State Fullerton. He became the head coach of the University of Texas Baseball team in 1997. He brought Texas back to the national spotlight with a trip to the College World Series in 2000 and won a National Championship in 2002 and 2005. With Texas, Coach Garrido has won 2 National title, 5 Super Regional titles, 5 regional titles, 2 conference title, 2 national coach of the year, 2 conference coach of the year and currently has over 30 former Texas players playing professional baseball.
